The Gay Ten Percent Myth
The 10% figure that began with Alfred Kinsey back in 1948 has been proven to be completely inaccurate. Wardell Pomeroy, one of Kinsey’s colleagues, admitted in a 1972 book that coaching was common in the Kinsey collection of data. Source: Wardell B. In an unpublished 1966 Kinsey Institute study, cited by Paul Gebhard in a 1972 article, only 8% of the males and 1% of the females reported any post-pubertal homosexual activity. According to Gebhard (a Kinsey confidant), this study was based on a sample of 593 males and 584 females interviewed by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. Four separate national surveys conducted in the United States in 1970, 1988, 1989 and 1990 by the National Opinion Research Center (total 7,408 subjects) came up with an aggregated incidence of 1.8% who had male-to-male sex during the previous year, with 3.3% percent reporting that they experienced male-to-male sexual contact "occasionally" or "fairly often" as adults, and 5-7% in a lifetime have had a homosexual encounter. A National Survey of Men in 1991 found 2% of sexually active men aged 20-39 (2.4% among whites and 1.3% among blacks) had had any same-gender sexual activity during the previous 10 years. Perhaps the largest and most significant study in the field is a continuing survey by the Federal government on homosexual activity and drug use. By March of 1991, the number of U.S. randomly surveyed adults had reached a staggering 119,347, making it the largest study of its kind ever conducted. This study revealed that only 3% of males had reported any homosexual activity or IV drug use since 1977. This ongoing study continues to reveal the same proportion in recent years. A 1992 French study reported 1.1% of men and 0.3% of women having had same-sex relations in the previous year, 1.4% / 0.4% in the previous five years, and 4.1% / 2.6% ever. Source: A. This study involved 20,055 subjects.
A comprehensive research study in 1993 of American and other countries attempts to quantify a rate, even factoring in a bias response, suggests that homosexual sex engaged in one or more times since adolescence is a mean of 5.5% and a median of 5.3% of males and a mean 2.5% and median 3.0% of females. Round numbers would thus be 5-6% for males and 2-3% for females. When narrowed down to the recent past (one year), the numbers dropped to about half respectfully. Source: Diamond, M. (1993). Another 1993 report by John et al interviewed 3,321 men aged 20-39 and found that only 2.3% of sexually active men had engaged in any same-gender sexual activity during the past 10 years, and approximately 1.1% had been exclusively homosexual during the same period.
A report in 1994 about information about same-gender sexual activity for both men and women stated that 2.7% of men had engaged in homosexuals in the last year, 4.1% over the past five years, and 4.9% since age 18. The results of women are 1.3% had homosexual sex in the last year, 2.2% over the past five years, and 4.1% since age 18. This information reveals that women engaged in homosexual activity about half as much amen. Source: Laumann, EO, Gagnon, JH, Micheals, RT, & Micheals, S. (1994). In 1995 combined data from different surveys of men between the ages of 18 and 49, all conducted between 1988 and 1994 found that 2.6% of male respondents reported male on male sexual contact within the prior 12 months, 4% within the prior five years and 5.3% since age 18. Conclusion:
With dozens upon dozens of studies done around the world and in America, it is clear that the 10% figure is scientific fraud. The 1990 U.S. Census adult population was 180 million. Approximately two million men and one million women engaged in at least one homosexual act during the previous year. Obviously, the people who are exclusively homosexual are less than that number. Even if you included bisexuals, about 1% of the population, the total number of people engaging in homosexual sex on a regular basis is between 2 to 3%.
